FLW Walleye Tour, Lake Sharpe May 7-10
The second stop for the FLW Walleye Tour is at Lake
Sharpe S.D. The last time the FLW was at Lake Sharpe was April 30th 2003.
That event was won by local angler Gerrick McComsey. Lake Sharpe is located
on the Missouri River starting below the dam of Lake Oahe at Pierre, South Dakota
going down stream 80 miles to Big Bend Dam at Fort Thompson.
The 4 years ( 2001-2004 ) walleye reproduction was below average on Lake Sharpe. The last three years walleye production has been good. There seems to be abundant numbers of 17 to 19 inch fish in the system. Even though the weights won’t be near what they were at the last FLW Walleye Tour event on Lake Erie, there should be a lot of limits brought to the scales. The rules for the FLW states that the anglers may have 8 walleye’s in the live well and can weigh 5, with only 2 over 20 inches. The two over 20” may be tough to find. Based on previous tournaments at Lake Sharpe it should take around 30 pounds to make the cut after the first three days of the tournament.
Only the top ten pro anglers and their co-anglers fish the last day. Most all western reservoir walleye presentations will be used in this tournament. Bottom bouncing with spinner rigs, live bait rigs and jigging will all be used in the upper section of the lake, which is more like a river. Trolling crank baits in the wider, lower section might produce the better fish.
Walleye Central
will have live coverage of the tournament with the “Live Leaderboard”, morning
and evening pictures, and more articles on how and where the fish are being
caught.
