Kelly Klemm used a ¼ oz. jig head with live minnows to put to together the winning weight. He pitched the jigs in shallow water from 5’ to 8’ and vertical jigged in water up to 12’ deep. He made the decision not to make the long run south today, but still put together a respectable weight of 6 pounds 11 ounces, the third best weight of the day. This is Kelly’s first win on the FLW Tour, being a pro fisherman for the last three years.
Ted Takasaki made a good run at Kelly Klemm weighing
the days top weight of 7 pounds 14 ounces, moving him from sixth place
to second. Ted did make the decision to make the long run south to get his five
fish today. He was working a 16’ to 20’ break using bottom bouncers with night
crawlers. He stated that staying on that break gave him the advantage over other
anglers in that area in the previous three days he fished there. Ted is a master
of boat control due to his vast experience as a tournament angler.
Scott Fairbairn was bait rigging while he told his co-angler partner to throw crankbaits towards shore as a secondary method which brought the second heaviest weight to the scales. His weight of 7 pounds 3 ounces moved him from fifth place to third.
The rest of the field used some of the above methods along with trolling crank baits with lead core line in the river channel. The wind changed the water clarity which effected the bite for some of the anglers that had a tough time on the final day of the tournament.
The weather today may have played a deciding factor in the outcome of the tournament. The temperature was 38 Degrees with rain and a north wind of 30 to 40 miles an hour. Some of the pros decided not to make the run south. Ted Takasaki did make the run and allowed 4 hours for the return trip, which paid off with the top weight of the day. Other pros opted to stay on the north end, some adjusting to the conditions and doing well while others struggled.
All the pro and co-anglers commented on what a great fishery Lake Sharpe is, not only for walleye and sauger but also how great the smallmouth bass fishing is. They also expressed how friendly and hospitable the communities of Fort Pierre and Pierre are and will return in the future.
