Bull Shoals, Arkansas – June 24, 2008-

Winter and spring rains have elevated Bull Shoals reservoir to with-in a few feet of top flood pool, which spread the shorelines up into the surrounding forest and even a few road-ways. In fact, water levels are nearly 37 vertical feet higher than when the PWT last visited Bull Shoals in 2004 and 2005.  What used to be a short 20ft walk from shore on a dock to the Marina bait shop has now turned into a healthy football field long gaunt.  However, all boat ramps are open and anglers are talking of some decent catches.

With the high water levels numerous tactics will be used this week. “There is a lot of flooded timber that anglers may fish.  Someone may just put together something new and win it in the tree’s this year. But there’s also a decent trolling bite going on. And I believe numerous anglers will be live bait rigging as well.”  Said Tournament Director Jim Kalkofen.

On the same dates in 2004, Mike Gofron won the tournament with a 3-day catch of 49.73 pounds. In 05’ Bill Ortiz won with a 3-day total of 47.97 pounds.  Bull Shoals has producing a lot of fish in the 19-21 inch range in past competitions.  In 04’ and in 05’ the tournament average was nearly 3lbs per fish.  Five to seven-pound were brought to the scales daily, with the largest fish caught during the competitions weighing in at 9.91 pounds.

Along with the high water, weather may play a role as well.  Tuesday brought sunny skies with a high in the lower 90’s and high humidity.  The forecast has much of the same for the rest of the week.  With the surface water temperature already at 82 degrees more hot weather could affect the bite.

Pro’s will be paired with a new co-angler each day.  Each boat will be able to bring 5 fish to the scales.  Walleyes must be 18” to keep in accordance with the Bull Shoals Lake regulations.  Upgrading is legal in Arkansas and will be legal for the contestants as well.

A 60-boat field will be competing tomorrow with take off each morning at 8:00am CST from the Bull Shoals Boat Dock and will return to Lions Club Park at 5 p.m. for weigh-in.
